Christoffel Plantin (c. 1520-1589) was a renowned French printer and publisher who who founded the Plantin Press in Antwerp, which grew to become one of the largest and most influential publishing houses of the 16th century in Europe.
In this portrait by the famous Dutch master Hendrik Goltzius, Plantin is depicted holding a compass that traces his personal motto, "Labore et Constantia" (By Labor and Consistency).
